How to price a gym membership in India: building your gym fee structure
Start with your costs, not with the gym next door. Work out the lowest monthly fee that covers your fixed costs at a member count you can realistically reach, then build 1, 3, 6 and 12 month plans above that floor. This guide shows the maths with one labelled example and how to look at local gyms without copying them blindly.
This is general information, not legal or tax advice. Check with your CA whether GST applies to your fees and whether you quote prices with or without it.
Step 1: find your floor
Your floor is the fee below which you lose money.
Floor per member = monthly fixed costs / members you expect to hold.
Example (assumptions): costs of 1,17,000 a month and 150 members give 780 rupees a month. Your fee has to be above that, with room for the owner's pay, slow months and equipment replacement. If your target fee does not clear the floor with a margin, the problem is in the costs or the member target, not in the fee chart. Our profit guide works through the same numbers.
Step 2: look at local gyms, then place yourself
"Average gym fees in India" is a bad guide, because rent and incomes differ street by street. The useful comparison is your catchment: the gyms a member would otherwise choose.
Visit or call three or four of them as a customer. For each one, write down:
- Monthly fee and the fee on 3, 6 and 12 month plans
- Admission or joining fee
- What is included: trainer guidance, cardio, steam, lockers, parking
- Opening hours and how crowded peak hours feel
- How the desk handled a new enquiry
Then ask what makes yours different. A smaller, quieter gym with personal attention can charge more than a bigger one. A new gym with no reputation may need to start closer to the field and raise fees later. Copying a rival's fee also copies their rent, their crowd and their problems.
Step 3: build the plan ladder
A ladder is the same gym at four commitments: 1, 3, 6 and 12 months. A longer plan gets a lower monthly rate, which rewards commitment and brings cash in early.
Example (assumptions): monthly price 1,000 rupees, discounts of 10% for 3 months, 15% for 6 and 20% for 12.
| Plan | Total | Per month | Member saves |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 month | 1,000 | 1,000 | none |
| 3 months | 2,700 | 900 | 300 |
| 6 months | 5,100 | 850 | 900 |
| 12 months | 9,600 | 800 | 2,400 |
Rules that keep a ladder healthy:
- Discounts should rise with length. A 3-month plan cheaper per month than a 6-month plan confuses members.
- Check the longest plan's monthly rate still clears your floor. Here 800 is above the 780 floor, but barely.
- Deep discounts are hard to undo. Starting at 30% or more leaves nowhere to go.
- Round to numbers that are easy to say aloud and write on a chart.
Try your own numbers. Enter the monthly price and your discounts and see the full ladder.
The same calculator lives on its own page: gym membership price calculator.
Step 4: admission fee, add-ons and discounts
- Admission fee. A one-time charge for setting up a new member. Keep it small and explain it. Waiving it is an easy offer for a slow season.
- Add-ons. Personal training, diet plans and group classes can be priced separately instead of bundled into the base fee. That keeps the base fee clear.
- Discounts. Decide who gets them before someone asks: students, couples, referrals, early renewal. A written rule is easier to hold than a bargain at the desk. Do the maths first, using the offer example in gym offer ideas.
Step 5: print it and keep it simple
Put the ladder on one chart members can read in ten seconds. The fee chart maker builds a printable chart and a WhatsApp-ready image from your plan prices. Browse more on the tools hub.
Review every year
Costs rise. Revisit the floor once a year, and raise fees for new members first. Tell existing members before their next renewal, in plain words, with the date.
Where an app helps, honestly
Once you have plans, you have to apply them correctly each time. Varzish Mate lets you set up membership plans and batches, then collect and renew by cash, UPI or card, with the Money tab splitting collection by plan and payment method. That shows you which plan members actually choose. It does not set your prices for you.
Questions and answers
How much should a gym charge per month in India?
There is no correct number for every gym. Start from your costs: divide monthly fixed costs by the members you can realistically hold to get a floor, then look at what nearby gyms charge and what your facilities are worth. The calculator on this page turns one monthly price into a full plan ladder.
What is a good discount for a 3, 6 or 12 month plan?
Make the discount grow with the length of the plan, and keep it modest enough that the monthly rate on the longest plan still covers your costs. The example on this page uses 10%, 15% and 20% as labelled assumptions, not recommendations.
Should I charge an admission fee?
Many gyms do, for the setup work of a new member: record, trial session, assessment. If you charge one, say clearly what it covers and keep it small relative to the monthly fee. Some gyms waive it as an offer.
How do I check what other gyms charge?
Visit or call three or four gyms in your area as a customer. Note the monthly fee, plan lengths, admission fee, what is included and how crowded peak hours are. Use it to place yourself, not to copy.
Should I show prices on my fee chart?
Yes. A clear printed fee chart avoids arguments at the desk and speeds up the decision. The fee chart maker makes one you can print or share on WhatsApp.
