How to use it

Start with the floor area in square feet and your city tier. Tier changes only the rent used for the deposit. Choose an equipment level, whether you want AC, a floor type and an interiors level.

Then open the rates box. Each rate has a visible starting value labelled as an assumption. These are not market prices. Change them to match what dealers and contractors quote you. The total updates as you type.

Get 2 to 3 local quotes

Before spending, get 2 to 3 quotes for each big line: equipment, flooring and interiors. Prices vary by city, by brand and by whether kit is new or refurbished. Put each quote into the matching rate, then compare totals.

A quick way to use the tool: set the rates to your cheapest quotes, note the total, then set them to your highest quotes and note it again. The gap between the two tells you how much your choices matter.

What each line means

  • Equipment: machines, racks, weights and benches, as a rate per square foot of floor.
  • Air conditioning: installation per square foot, if you choose it.
  • Flooring: the floor type you choose, per square foot.
  • Interiors: paint, mirrors, lighting, reception and similar, per square foot.
  • Rent deposit: monthly rent times the months of deposit your landlord asks for.
  • Licences, signage, small items: a one-time lump sum you can edit.
  • Buffer: a percentage added for overruns.

What it does not cover

It does not include running costs, a trainer's salary in the first months, or marketing. Those decide whether the gym lasts. Once you have a total, put your expected members and costs into the gym profit calculator to see when you would break even.

Rules for registrations and permits differ by state, so check with your local authority.

Questions and answers

How much does it cost to open a gym in India?

It depends on the size, the city, the equipment and how much you spend on the space. This calculator does the sum from rates you set, so the answer is only as good as your quotes. Fill in 2 to 3 local quotes and the total becomes something you can plan on.

Where do the default rates come from?

They are starting assumptions, not market facts, and each one is labelled that way. Replace every rate with what your equipment dealer, flooring contractor and landlord actually quote you.

Does the total include running costs?

No. It covers the one-time cost of opening, plus a rent deposit. Salaries, electricity, rent and marketing for the first months are separate. The profit calculator helps you with those.

What is the buffer?

A percentage added to the whole total for things that cost more than planned. It is also an editable rate. Set it to zero if you want the plain sum.

Do I need a licence before I open?

Rules differ by state and city. Check with your local authority about shop and establishment registration, fire clearance and other permits. The calculator has a small lump sum line for these, which you can edit.
